THE HOLY CROWN

The Holy Crown is the Hungarians’ most important national relic and the symbol of Hungarian statehood. According to King Saint Stephen’s reminders written to his son, the Holy Crown means the country, the kingdom, the king, the faith, the church, the royal qualities and virtues. He writes to his son, Prince Emeric, that “the extent of the virtues makes the kings’ crown complete”. The composition is complete with the coronation insignia, the orb and the sceptre.

Since the 40th Debrecen Flower Carnival it has become a tradition that the cities of Hungary and the cross-border regions greet the flower cart: the Holy Crown has paid its visit to the cities of Budapest, Balatonfüred, Eger, Pécs, Nagyvárad, Cegléd, Kecskemét, Székesfehérvár, Gyula and Tiszafüred, as well as appearing at the Hortobágy Equestrian Days in 2017. The composition is a regular guest in Esztergom, where it is blessed by Cardinal Péter Erdő, the Archbishop of Esztergom. In 2019 it was also exhibited in Csíkszereda, along with the composition depicting the legend of Saint Ladislaus. Fulfilling the mission of the Holy Crown to unite the nation, the flower cart has thus travelled all around the Carpathian Basin from the western part of the country as far as Székely Land, heralding the unity of Hungarians.

TRIANON 100

the flower cart of the city of Debrecen

The emblematic thought of Paul, Apostle of Christ, “your grace is sufficient for me” expresses the message of the composition clearly without any misunderstandings, which heralds the never-ceasing bond of the unity of Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin, marking the hundredth anniversary of our national tragedy of fate.

The work of art of biblical strength dreamed and sculptured by artist Sándor Pikó first features a fish following the frontiers of historical Hungary, dressed in immaculately clean white flowers. For a moment, observed from a certain angle, the central part of Jonah’s great fish, which is proceeding towards Nineveh, following God’s commands, flashes the shape of the dramatically diminished “Truncated” Hungary, which faces the viewer with “deep emotion and painful anguish” because of the injustice of the Trianon peace ultimatum in the words of writer Albert Wass. But what is our justice worth without peace? This question is answered by the double cross symbolising God himself, driving our eyesight towards the sky, where two angels are flying with the Holy Crown. Perhaps their mission is not in vain because the situation has never been so favourable to restore the unity of the nations of the Carpathian Basin that all belong under the protection of our Crown.

TIME TO GO TO DEBRECEN

Debrecen is the city of sun and light. Yet it is also the city of flowers for this one week. When designing the composition, the most important aspect was to lend appropriate emphasis to the play of light. The city coat of arms produced with lead glass method has become the trademark of Debrecen Flower Carnival by today. The phoenix symbolises how the city managed to renew itself after all menaces and demolition. The Sun is the symbol of immortality and power.

HERITAGE HOLDS TOGETHER – PRINCELY TREASURES FROM SZOBOSZLÓ

the flower cart of the city of Hajdúszoboszló

The flower cart representing the Municipality of Hajdúszoboszló City commemorates Stephen Bocskai, Prince of Transylvania, who settled the horse-riding Hajduk population in the city in 1606, The leader of our only triumphant war of independence closed down a war lasting for 15 years and restored the independence of Transylvania, the sovereignty of Hungarian nobility and the rights of religious freedom. This is what the motto written on the flower cart refers to: “We value the freedom of our faith, conscience and our old laws more than all the gold.”

In 1605 the Osman sultan gave Bocskai a crown, which became the symbol of a strong power. The Hapsburgs considered this dangerous and transported the crown to Vienna in 1610 after Bocskai’s death.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring the original crown back home but Hajdúszoboszló received the permission to prepare a faithful and noble replica, which will be on show in the Princely Treasury, the new building of the city museum from autumn 2020.

The replica of Bocskai’s spectre, kept in Bucharest, can be viewed at the same place.

In addition to the crown and the spectre, the flower cart of Hajdúszoboszló also features the coat of arms of Bocskai and a Hajduk on horseback.

“EVERY DAY WITH RESPONSIBILITY”

the flower cart of A.K.S.D. Urban Management Ltd.

A.K.S.D. Ltd. has been one of the determining companies of the city since 1992 or for 27 years as the citizens of the city can meet the more than 400 employees of the company group in their everyday lives as the name implies. In addition to its tasks related to waste management, the company also performs tasks in connection with the operation of the cemeteries.

Our flower cart displayed last year inspired our present composition as the protection and safeguarding of our environment is extremely important to us. We present ourselves at Debrecen Flower Carnival for the nineteenth time: the koalas appearing on this year’s exhibit symbolise everything the human race should protect as it is an immense challenge to take real steps to preserve our planet facing climate change.

A number of natural disasters can be attributed to climate change, including the forest fires that cause harrowing losses. Just think of the vast destruction brought on by the Australian or Amazonian forest fires, where the forest disappeared on millions of hectares and millions of animals died. With our composition, we commemorate Dr Jenő Nagy, former scientist teacher of the Protestant College of Debrecen, who played an outstanding role in declaring the Great Forest of Debrecen a nature reserve as a founder of the Bird Protection Association of the Tiszántúl region.

The more the planet warms up, the more losses we may suffer. Our company also takes steps against global warming and in order to promote sustainable development and consumption as we believe that the future lies in the hands of our children and that we must pay special attention to their environmental education. Our flower cart faces viewers with the responsibility and the work we must take if we wish to ensure that the Earth remains a liveable place.

“HE COMES, SEES, WINS AND RUNS!”

the flower cart of Debrecen Vocational Training Centre

Debrecen Vocational Training Centre celebrated the 5th anniversary of its foundation this year. During this period the institute has undergone structural and substantive changes adapting to the economic and industrial development.

It could not have selected a better character for its flower cart to express this process than the hero of writer István Fekete’s novel titled Vuk. István Fekete is the most widely read Hungarian writer of all times. Whoever has read the story of Vuk, the young fox, knows how smartly the “redcoat” had to manage in the wild. His amiable character was composed of continuous learning, development and obtaining experiences.

This is what the flower cart of DSZC depicts with the Vuk character holding a selfie stick in his paw, referring to the rapid technical development with the telephone and the past with the IT devices near his tail. But the present and the future are built on the past. Without the person of János Neumann, the father of the digital computer, the large-scale innovation of today’s world could not happen. We are proud of our famous ancestors.

Let’s not forget that those who are open to development like Vuk will “come, see, win and run!”

ONCE UPON A TIME…LIFE

the flower cart of Gedeon Richter Plc.

A flower cart has been created on behalf of Gedeon Richter Plc. for the first time for the Debrecen Flower Carnival. The chosen composition builds on the animated series titled “Once Upon a Time… Life”, so popular in the early 1990s. The series presented the structure and operation of the human body in detail on cell level. The characters of the episodes were the red blood cells, white blood cells and the kind wise all-knowing white-bearded teacher on the good side, opposed to the negative characters, the viruses and bacteria. Our mission is health, this is the slogan of Richter Gedeon Pharmaceuticals and this single sentence makes it clear why this composition will be displayed on the flower cart.

The biotechnological plant of Gedeon Richter Plc., a company playing a determining part in the business life of the city of Debrecen, started operating in 2012 in the Industrial Park in Határ Street. Continuous developments have taken place in the years since then so the total value of the Debrecen investment now exceeds HUF 40 billion. Due to the expansion of the research and production capacity, the number of employees has dynamically increased and now reaches 330. The Company strives to maintain close cooperation with the University of Debrecen so that the best-trained specialists can become the employees of Richter. The company gives high priority to retaining highly qualified and committed workforce in Debrecen so it ensures an inspiring and competitive environment for its colleagues.

KEEP IT CLEAN!

the flower cart of Teva Pharmaceuticals

The special flower cart of Teva sends a message from the past to the present.

Following the traditions, Teva Pharmaceuticals once again participates in Debrecen Flower Carnival with its own flower cart. The flower cart designed for the event in 2020 will not only amaze viewers with its sight: it will be more than a work of art of visual beauty by conveying a meaning more current than ever. It will honour Ignác Semmelweis, the doctor renown as the saviour of mothers and the father of medical disinfection, while it also sends a message to the present, stuck by the pandemic. One half of the cart features the figure of a mother carelessly playing with her child, her locks of hair appearing as waves of water at the other end of the composition, where Semmelweis washes his hands in this water. This is how the composition symbolises the close connection between Semmelweis and delivering mothers, as well as the significance of washing hands and disinfection. Teva does a lot to promote the latter and not only with its special flower cart; in the past few months the company has donated more than 2,000 litres of hand disinfectant to the institutions in Debrecen and to key events of the city.

Always take care of safety when applying biocides. Before use always read the label and the user instructions. It is extremely flammable and it may cause serious exe irritation. Only for external use!

WE ARE TOGETHER! – THE HERITAGE OF SAINT LADISLAUS

the joint flower cart of Bihar County Council, Hajdú-Bihar County Municipality and the City of Debrecen

The initiative „We are together!” was created this spring as a result of the cooperation between the charity and civil society organisations of Bihar County with the goal of offering a helping hand to those who are in great need in the extraordinary situation that evolved due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the time since then a number of social actions have started ensuring assistance for the old and the people in need with hot food, protective masks or by other means. More than a hundred volunteers have participated in the programme, making the everyday lives of hundreds of applicants simpler.

We wish to continue emphasising the importance of cooperation, which is why we decided to present such a historic personality who is the symbol of unity and perseverance. We could not have found a person more appropriate to embody this ideal than King Saint Ladislaus, whose full-size equestrian statue was ceremonially inaugurated exactly 630 years ago in 1390. At the Debrecen Flower Carnival we will now display a flower copy of the new statue now in the process of production to honour the memory of the knight king and we will then take it to a number of towns in the Érmellék region on 22-23rd August.
